January feels like the longest month in existence, people all over have opted to do Veganuary. I didn’t opt in this year but very well may do a month later on in the year. I just didn’t have the energy or know how as this month is always jam packed busy for me. I do go for vegan dishes more and more especially now I am lactose intolerant and no longer have dairy I feel it is a good stepping stone and I am trying to reduce the amount of meat I eat. So I was thrilled when I was invited to try the new Vegan menu at one of my favourite restaurants Cosy Club.
For the starter we had some of the tapas which is £4.95 each or 3 for £13.95. The portions are generous so you certainly get your moneys worth. I had the Garlic Mushrooms on Sourdough Toast, I thought mushrooms were a much loved by all type food but more and more people tell me that they hate them and I just don’t get why! They were so nice, really well seasoned and the garlic wasn’t too overpowering.
My friend Emma from How To Emma opted for the Heirloom tomato & Lovage Pesto which was also on sourdough toast with balsamic glaze. It was a rainbow medley of tomatoes and she said she did really enjoy it but didn’t really get any of the taste of the pesto. We also shared the Super Grain Salad, as much as I enjoyed my mushrooms on toast this was my favourite. I was quite reserved when ordering as it is black quinoa, coconut and coriander rice, edamame beans with numeric cauliflower rice with rocket, pesto, coriander and pomegranate. I just found it weird that people put pomegranate on salad.
But I am glad I tried it, it was delicious and the pomegranate really complimented the dish and brought all the flavours together. Again I didn’t get much of a pesto taste but there was a lot of flavours in there. I would happily eat it again and even try to recreate it myself.
On the the main event, the mains. They are all around £10. We tried 3 dishes but had smaller versions of them. We tried the Creamy Leek Tart which is topped with roasted butternut squash, walnuts, sautéed mushroom alongside crushed new potatoes and a tomato and sofrito sauce. It was really moreish, I would 100% have it again. I don’t know what they did to the pastry but it was the best vegan pastry I have tried. I would have it without the sauce though, I’m not really fond on sauces accompanying my dinners. We shared this one and just had a taste as it caught our eye on the menu.
Emma had the Thai burger, I did have a taste but it was way too hot for me but she thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a spicy quinoa burger with edamame beans, pan choi, wood roasted peppers, coconut and sweet chilli jam. All put nicely into a sourdough bun served with house slaw and fries. Emma also commented on how the slaw was and that couldn’t tell the difference much in regards to it being veganised.
I opted for the Super Food Bowl, this was a nice portion and they had made it smaller for me as well so I can imagine you get a good amount when you have the normal sized dish. It seems to be a bigger and more extravagant version of the Super Grain Salad we had in the starter. It is the black quinoa, coconut and coriander rice, edamame beans, lovage pesto with pomegranate as well as avocado, hummus, lemony kale, heirloom tomatoes, soy and ginger cucumber and picked red cabbage, served with toasted seeds and warm pitta bread. Now that is a mouth full, literally. I just feel healthy talking about it. After Buddha bowls being all the rage in 2018 this is very much an adaptation of that I feel. So much goodness put into a bowl and tasting scrumptious.
They have such an amazing vegan menu and I would highly recommend giving it ago, Vegan or not. We have been told that this year we need to look at eating less meat to help the planet so why not start by trying new foods, giving the vegan dishes a go and I’m sure you will enjoy them as much as me and Emma did.
Now I can’t finish this without a shoutout to the staff who are always top notch, super friendly and have the best recommendations. Our waiter Luke recommended that I try the mocktail Bucking Mule, if you like anything with ginger in you will adore this! It is now my new favourite and I am already planning my next trip so I can have another.
