I have always seen pictures from The Botanist in other cities but I have never been to one. The beautiful and crazy drinks, the food always looks lush and I was so happy to see they were bringing it to Coventry. Myself and some of the bloggers from my Coventry Bloggers group were invited to the launch night and to go and try the food which was so exciting. We received a beautiful invite with a little bottle of Gin, perfect to pre-drink on the night of the party.
The launch night was electric, the atmosphere was so happy and positive. Walking into the newly decorated restaurant was like nothing you would expect to see in Coventry. I felt like I was in some swanky place in London. We were greeted with some Prosecco and just started taking snaps with all of the beautiful decor. There was so much going on, a Gin masterclass upstairs in the seating area, a beer expert on site to answer all your questions and the staff taking some signature cocktails round for us to try.
It was quite packed in there but everyone seemed to enjoy it. The plants everywhere which I am pretty sure are fake, the amazing decor and then live music started which just brought everything together. I love listening to live music and the band playing was so good! I have been there twice since the open night to try food and unfortunately I can safely say I won’t be going there for food again any time soon.
Now don’t get my wrong, the food wasn’t bad per se, however I feel that for what you are getting they could easily knock a few pounds of the price. The first meal I went to was a Sunday lunch, we sat down at 1:30 and they had ran out of all meat except beef and lamb, which were my two least favourite meat and some of the sides so the choice we had wasn’t much.
There was 8 of us in the party and we made our orders, the food didn’t take too long to come out but when it did it was cold, like hardly any heat to it at all. We sent them back and waited again, it came out this time quite warm, not piping hot but warm enough to eat. It did taste really nice, the potatoes, the veg and as I said I’m not a massive fan of Lamb anyway but it didn’t taste too bad just seemed quite fatty. We then were looking forward to dessert but after waiting for about 20-30 minutes we were told they ran out of everything but ice cream so we gave it a pass.
The second time I went the food was lovely, I opted for the Pork Belly Hanging Kebab, it had some peppers and onions on it and some chips at the bottom, The Pork Belly was quite crispy which is just how I like it as you know sometimes it can be really fatty. I would of preferred more vegetables with it to be honest but the price of the sides I couldn’t justify paying £3.50 for a corn on the cob. It was really satisfying, tasted great, but again I just feel the prices are too high for what you get.
The service downstairs with the bar staff has been amazing from my experience they are so friendly and have a chat with you. Unfortunately there was an incident with my party after I left where one of the waitresses was being rude from a item on the bill that shouldn’t of been there but I had left at that point.
The drinks on the other hand are amazing, I highly recommend going there for drinks, even the non alcoholic cocktails are so nice and look extravagant. I think for me The Botanist is a nice place to go for a drink with friends, listen to the live music and just relax.
